For the past three months I have been searching for the perfect dog. I have always wanted a puggle. A puggle is a beagle and a pug mixed together. These two dogs together create a loyal breed that is good with people and not to mention the cutest puppies ever! I was trying to find a breeder in the Pinellas County area. I decided to take my mom to a pet store that I knew would have them. I walked into the store that was filled with pitful dogs barking and crying, "please take me home!" We went up to each glass cage and watched as the dogs pressed their wet noses up against the side, looking at us with their sad, droopy eyes. I knew these puppies were not happy here. This specific pet store seemed to treat the animals poorly. I watched the staff members throw bowls of water in the cage spilling it everywhere leaving only a drop for them to actually drink. I also noticed how much urine and feces were laying around the cages. Not only did they mix waste with food but they would put golden retrievers with yorkshire terriers. I am an animal lover so this situation disturbed me.

I found a similar story by a lady named Camille Manfrodonia. She went to a pet store just to browse and found the exact set up I did, but worse. Unlike most people Camille took action. She created the group "Rawhide Rescue." This group shelters animals found on the streets or ones being mistreated at pet stores. The volunteers at Rawhide nurse abused animals back to health and make sure they receive all the proper shots. During my search for the perfect dog I found a place that sold puppies for breeders. It was a clean building where every employee has either gone to school for animals or is going to school for animals. All the puppies were in large gated areas and with other dogs of the same or similar breeds. As I walked by all the wagging tails I saw her. I approached her pen and reached my hand, she turned right over on her back for me to rub her belly. I said to my self this is the dog I want. I then took her into a room so we could get to know each other. We played and gave kisses to each other every chance we could. I told the woman assisting me to get the paperwork ready I was taking her home! As I filled out two sheets of paper and received her past medicals bills I found it odd that she did not ask me any questions regarding my background. If you are going to sell a sweet, defenseless animal to someone I would hope they were some one you could trust. Maybe I looked like a good person?

Bailey, my new puppy, could not be more spoiled, I assume she is one of the happiest dogs out there. What bothers me is what about the puppies who go home with people like Michael Vick? The pet store/breeder would have no idea that man used dogs for fighting if he wasn't well known in our society. I believe we need to protect our animals and make sure every environment is a safe one.
