Introduction

After volunteering for Hospice for four years, and also watching Hospice come in and take care of people in my family, I feel that more people should be aware of their services and the good they do. By raising awareness, I would also like to come up with ways to fundraise for the organization and generate publicity.

Definition of Key Terms

Hospice-

The concept of hospice is one of comprehensive care for the dying. The physical facilities may be very extensive or quite minimal. The AAFP, therefore, chooses to define hospice in terms of what it does rather than the institution in which it is performed.

A hospice is a program designed to care for the dying and their special needs. Among these services all hospice programs should include:

Control of pain and other symptoms through medication, environmental adjustment and education.

Psychosocial support for both the patient and family, including all phases from diagnosis through bereavement.

Medical services commensurate with the needs of the patient.

Interdisciplinary "team" approach to patient care, patient and family support, and education with physician leadership.

Integration into existing facilities where possible.

Specially trained personnel with expertise in care of the dying and their families.

Charity-

Provision of help or relief to the poor; almsgiving.

Something given to help the needy; alms.

An institution, organization, or fund established to help the needy.

Benevolence or generosity toward others or toward humanity.

Philanthropy-

Philanthropy is the act of donating money, goods, time, or effort to support a charitable cause, usually over an extended period of time and in regard to a defined objective. In a more fundamental sense, philanthropy may encompass any altruistic activity which is intended to promote good or improve human quality of life. Someone who is well known for practicing philanthropy may sometimes be called a philanthropist. Although such individuals are often very wealthy, people may nevertheless perform philanthropic acts without possessing great wealth.

Fundraising-

The act or occupation of soliciting money for charitable organizations, political parties, etc.

Palliative Care-

Palliative care is an approach that improves the quality of life of patients and their families facing the problem associated with life-threatening illness, through the prevention and relief of suffering by means of early identification and impeccable assessment and treatment of pain and other problems, physical, psychosocial and spiritual. Palliative care:

• provides relief from pain and other distressing symptoms;

• affirms life and regards dying as a normal process;

• intends neither to hasten or postpone death;

• integrates the psychological and spiritual aspects of patient care;

• offers a support system to help patients live as actively as possible until death;

• offers a support system to help the family cope during the patients illness and in their own bereavement;

• uses a team approach to address the needs of patients and their families, including bereavement counselling, if indicated;

• will enhance quality of life, and may also positively influence the course of illness;

• is applicable early in the course of illness, in conjunction with other therapies that are intended to prolong life, such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy, and includes those investigations needed to better understand and manage distressing clinical complications.

Evaluation/Problem Statement also Causal Composition

Hospice is a palliative care organization that has been around for a number of years, but is not as well known as it could be. Through a combination of awareness and fundraising activity, money and publicity will be generated to advance the organization.

Thesis Statement/Proposal

I would like to propose a variety of events for Hospice. Creating charity events, such as auctions, balls, dinners, and sports tournaments are a great way to increase awareness and raise money.

Possibly pull newspaper and/or magazine articles citing people’s own personal experiences with

Hospice. Will need to search at library or through online magazine archives.

Audience finder: using tags for storming, norming, performing. Other uses?

I still have no idea how to do tags… I have to do some surfing and figure this out….

The tagging game won't make sense unless you create a (free) account at de.licio.us. And you can meet the "audience finder" blog assignment by simply doing a brief rhetorical analysis of a web site or clutch of web sites that tell us a little bit about how/why you are structuring your project, and who you hope to reach with your project. However, I do recommend trying de.liciou.us, because when you "tag" a site that you deem crucial to your enterprise, then you can see the bookmarks of all others in the entire de.liciou.us commmunity who have also tagged that same site. Not only that, you can look for patterns of interest--if users who tag your site "hospice" also tag it "philanthropy" or some unexpected keyword, you may find new appeals with which to resonate with your audience.
