Introduction

After experiencing the service of Hospice for the care of my paternal grandmother, I have a great respect for the organization. I would like to propose charity events to raise funds and awareness for this great organization. I think people are aware of its existence but possibly haven’t committed much thought to its importance until their service is needed.

Definition of key terms

HOSPICE- Provides services in a patient's residence or in a hospice facility for patients with a diagnosis of a terminal illness. They provide a coordinated program of professional services, including pain management and counseling for patients; nursing, physician, therapy, and social work services; counseling and support for family members and friends of the patient; and other support services. Hospices are required to be licensed and surveyed by the State of Florida. (From defining Hospice)

Thesis statement/proposal

There are only two things we as human can be sure of in life that is to live and to die. Hopefully, the life that we live is full of exquisite moments with family and friends. The transition into sickness or death is not an easy one for the patient or loved ones, but Hospice provides a service of compassion and respect to the entire family. In this time it is important to make the patient comfortable usually at home or if not possible then at a Hospice house. In both situations the patient receives medical assistance (CNA, RN, PRN, Medical Doctors, etc) and prescription drugs to put them at ease and as comfortable as possible. The time and travel of the staff, medicine, and equipment all costs significant amounts of money and often Hospice centers have relationships with Medicaid and Medicare, but there is still a balance left to be paid and Hospice is a Not For Profit (NFP) organization. Every life is a valuable one and Hospice does an amazing service to the community and families and therefore should have the opportunity to receive donations from the public to continue their great work. I propose a Hospice and Palliative Care fundraising night at the A La Carte Pavilion (with performers, music, socializing, and an evening raffle of a 4 night golf package or weekend in Miami getaway) and an hour special or public service announcement to be aired on WUSF showcasing the importance of Hospice and family stories. There will be a toll free number for viewers to call pledges in and it could be narrated by Matt Lauer (Co-Anchor of the TODAY Show) whose father received care in a Palm Beach County Hospice.

Mission Statements:

It is no easy task to support family and friends through the difficult time of loosing a loved one, but Hospice provides the service to make it possible. It is important to keep this NPO going to continually serve patients and families and my intent is to provide Hospice/Palliative Care with monetary resources to continue their valued and appreciative work through two charity events for next Spring.
